History of lifting #3 : The invention of stranded wire rope

Initially made from natural fibers (sisal, etc.), wire rope has undergone numerous evolutions over the centuries in order to lift and pull ever heavier loads and thus meet the growing needs of human civilization.

In 1834, Wilhelm Albert invented the modern stranded wire rope, i.e. a rope made up of metal wires grouped together in several groups known as strands. This invention facilitated mining and greatly increased yields.

These wire ropes were initially made up of three strands of four wires each, and soon replaced the chains and ropes previously used, as they were deemed more durable, lighter and more efficient.

Since 1834, stranded wire rope has become increasingly complex, with more and more different strands, wires and cores to suit the specific requirements of each industry.
